Volvo Team Telefonica Is "Waste Aware"

As part of an initiated series on being sustainable sailors, in a recent interview with four of the Under 30 sailors of Team Telefoncia I posed the question:

Where DOES the garbage/rubbish go?

The crew:Antonio "Neti" Cuervas-mons; Daryl Wislang; Pablo Arrarte and Mike Pammenter share the team's efforts to bring as little non-biodegradble items as possible. All plastics and items the ocean can not naturally "compost" (i.e. food) is stored in bags in the bow; where one hopefully does not have to go! This keeps them company till arriving in port for proper disposal.

Mike Pammenter, native to Cape Town shares,"We try to take biodegradable stuff. So all non-biodegradable stuff gets kept onboard until we arrive."

The old salts did find means to recycle and reuse some items in the ceremonial crossing of the equator...ewww...

The moral of the this tale however, is not to torture yourself or world with the rubbish (well unless King Neptune gives permission.) Think like a sailor preparing for a long leg. Look ahead...

Imagine if you had to live with the generated rubbish for weeks at a time...

A little thought to the amount of trash generated by convenience (i.e. buy bulk instead of individually packaged, using reusable storage containers) can help each be mindful to making more sustainable choices as consumers.
